Review: Too Many Games

This April I was reading the message boards over at Neo-Geo.com where I saw a topic for a get together for a convention called Too Many Games. The link took you to the website were they had pictures of the previous convention. It looked like a giant swap meet of classic gamers selling stuff and best of all, it was free.
So when I saw they were going to be doing another Too Many Games in August, I let Craig and Yusuf know and we were on our way to Reading PA.
The trip was a royal pain in the ass. Craig had printed out the directions from off of Google. But what we and Google Maps didn’t know that many of the roads were closed due to construction, so we had to take other routes to get there. It must have added a good half an hour onto our time, but we made it to the hotel and checked in.
The deal was, you paid two dollars online to get into the “convention” and when you got there, you received a ticket good for three bucks, so you pretty much got in for free, plus they gave you a buck to go shopping.
They rented out a whole ballroom at the hotel and it was packed with tables of venders selling classic and current video games. It’s just like at Philly Classic/VGXPO were the front of the convention is all tables of games to buy.
There was another table set up with the kind folks from OverClocked ReMix selling t-shirts and playing some good music for all of us. They had a lot of great tunes!
My friend Carlson from Mad-Gear was right when I walked in. He’s got a great selection of used import video games at good prices. I picked up Sailor Moon S for the 3DO and Sailor Moon Super S for the PS1 from him. While Super S works great (Though the game isn’t that good) Sailor Moon S on the 3DO works and looks great, but I need to get a system to play it. I thought the FreeDO emulator would run the game, and it does, it’s just VERY slow and you can’t use a controller on it! Thankfully the 3DO was region free, so if I can snag a cheap one that works I’ll have a way to play it.
While all of the dealers had a lot of great stuff, the things that I’m looking for are games that people DON’T sell back. I kept looking for all of the Disney NES games with no luck. We did get there late, so if they did have them, they probably got gobbled up by the first batch of people.
Two of the guys from Neo-Geo.com were running some good tournaments. They had Fist of the North Star, Groove on Fight, Ikaruga, Super Smash Brother Melee and Rumble Fish all for tournaments. Tron (I hope that’s your screen name!) had a TV set up with a SuperGun (It’s to hook up Arcade Games on a home television) with a Double Dragon game, The Simpsons and the very rare, Daraku Tenshi: The Fallen Angels.
One guy had a nice table set up with a bunch of cool t-shirts of different arcade marquees, along with a bunch of cool pins and key chains. I got a Neo-Geo pin from him and I got his web address, so I can get some shirts from him.
To round it off, there were free play arcade games too! The same T-Shirt dealer had a nice Total Carnage machine for sale, and there was a mini arcade game of Gorf and a Super Cobra with a MAME unit installed with a bunch of great games.
So while I only got three things, I had a lot of fun meeting all of the folks at Too Many Games and I will definitely go to the next one when they host it. If you're in the mood for some classic video games and got some money to spend, make sure you don’t miss the next one!
